MUCKYPUPS

SCHOOL POLYTUNNEL

The polytunnel was built in the School grounds in February 2009. The first event held in the polytunnel was Potato Day on Friday March 6th. The event was a huge success. Every child planted their own seed potato which they nurtured until the end of June. The children were thrilled to harvest and take home their home grown potatoes.

The polytunnel contains two raised beds full of plants grown from seed. The children have enjoyed nurturing their seeds and plants and have had successsful harvests of most of their crops including carrots, onions, peas and strawberries. Two outdoor raised soil beds have been built alongside the polytunnel and funding has been approved for a water tap to be fitted next to the polytunnel.

The children have their on tools, aprons, watering cans and plastic baskets. There are hanging shelves and a cupboard in the polytunnel, which are used to store equipment, seeds, lables, pens, gloves. Water butts and composters have been set up next to the polytunnel.

MUCKYPUPS - WHO WE ARE

We are a group of approximately 20 volunteers who work regularly in the polytunnel with small groups of children from both Nunney Pre-School and Nunney First School. We also help with polytunnel maintence and support MuckyPups speical events.

The volunteers come from a range of backgrounds and include mums and dads of school children, volunteers who already work at the school, members of the local WI, allotments owners, a professional gardener and members of the Frome Flower Show. Volunteers with gardening knowledge are especially welcome as the children are keen to learn! Volunteers interested in working with the children need to complete a Disclosure Form.

WHAT DO MUCKYPUPS DO?

There are currently 8x half hour sessions running inside the polytunnel. A timetable is drawn up every year and 2 allocated volunteers cover each session. This year MuckyPups have introduced a lunchtime Garden Club which runs Monday to Thursday, 12.20 to 12.50 pm. Class sessions this year run Monday to Thursday in the afternoons. Last year MuckyPups had a stand, display and even some entries into the Nunney Flower Show. We enjoyed it so much that we plan to take part again this year with more entries.

The volunteers encourage and support the children in their sessions. The children really enjoy themselves and are very responsive. Volunteers also look after all the plants in the polytunnel, for example by ensuring daily watering takes place over the summer months, at weekends and when the school is closed over holidays.

A weekly schedule has been drawn up for the lunchtime Garden Club sessions but as a guide only, as volunteers are welcome to introduce their own too!

Teachers and children have projects they wish to undertake in Class sessions and volunteers support these projects initiatives. A record is kept at the end of each session detailing the work that has beeen undertaken.
